Why use an electrician?

Quick fixes might end up costing you more than you can afford

Short version

"It works - can't I just wire it myself?" The temptation is familiar to homeowners and hobbyists alike. But in Norway, electrical installations are more strictly regulated than many people realise, and for good reason. Anyone who's changed a light bulb knows that electricity is harmless - until it isn't. Faulty fixed installations are one of the most common causes of house fires in Norway, so the rules are clear: Most work that is fixed to the wall must be carried out by professionals.

What you can fix yourself?
  • Replacing covers

You can change the cover of switches and sockets yourself, but this only applies to the cover itself. Fitting the switch or socket itself is an intervention in the fixed installation and must be done by an electrician.

  • Hanging ceiling lights

You can install or replace lamps hanging from ceiling hooks yourself, as long as they are connected with a crown clamp or plug/socket. The most important thing is that the lamp is not part of the fixed installation.

  • Installing plug on wire

You are allowed to fit an ordinary plug to a wire yourself, for example to a lamp. This applies to two-pole plugs, with or without earthing, up to 25 amperes (A). You can also fit a two-pole extension socket up to 16A.

  • Replacing panel oven

You can install or replace heaters that have a cord with a plug yourself, as long as they are plugged into a regular socket.

In a country filled with a proud "do it yourself" culture, many people are tempted to tackle renovations and repairs on their own. But when it comes to the electrical system, there's a critical line between simple tasks and work that requires a professional. Crossing that line can, at worst, lead to a fire or serious injuries, and at best to problems with insurance and loss of property value.

At SG Armaturen, we partner with Norwegian electricians. We design products with a focus on quality, safety and easy installation, but the value of a good product is only realised when it is installed professionally and safely. That's why an authorised electrician is your most important partner in ensuring a safe and functional home.

Main risks of doing things without electrician
  • Capped insurance

Should a fire or damage occur as a result of unauthorised electrical work, the insurance company may reduce or refuse payment.

  • Direct fire hazard

Incorrect installation, poor connection or incorrect dimensioning of cables can lead to overheating and short circuits that can start a fire.

  • Loss of value

When selling a property, documentation is required that electrical work has been carried out by professionals. Lack of documentation can reduce the value of the property.

At SG Armaturen, we pride ourselves on delivering high-quality products that electricians trust. Our focus on ease of installation makes their job easier, but it's their expertise that ensures the installation in your home is safe and legally compliant. The next time you're planning a project involving electricity, remember that an authorised electrician isn't an expense, it's an investment in you and your family's peace of mind.
